At the end of 2012, our lovely friend Celeste invited me to watch her band jam the one evening. She’s been asking me for a couple of weeks but was unable because of work. This particular night was good for me because I was off the next day.
Unknown to me, she had a plan brewing. She picked me up from home (I moved back into my parent’s home after my 4 year relationship ended and I was already single for a year) and listened to me babble on about dating and the fella I was seeing at the time. She was giving me valuable advice and in the same breath, told me to drop the guy. Before I knew it, she was telling me all about the guitarist in her band. After 5 minutes of pimping out her friend, I turned to her and asked her if this was a setup. She laughed and laughed and said “see what you think”.
We arrived at the jam space in Coomera and sitting on the footpath was Nathan and Nick. With bright red hair (because why not right?), Celeste introduced me to Nick and Nathan (or Naaan as she introduced him to me). Now, I have met Nick before when I’ve watched them perform, but never Nathan. Before I knew it, he reached for my hand, came in for a hug and kissed me on my cheek. I am pretty sure my face matched my hair then. At that point in my life, I hardly had people touching me, let alone hug me and kiss my cheek, but this felt different.
I got introduced to the rest of the band and sat on a stool minding my own business, enjoying the music and chatting away. At the end of the jam, when it was time to pack up, Celeste said to Nathan, “do you mind taking Karen home? She lives 5 minutes from you and plus she is not working tomorrow so she can stay back a bit”. My face matched my hair again and I looked at her saying, “its ok, you can take me if you have to go now”. She said “no, its ok, Nathan can take you home” turned to Nathan and said “is that ok with you?”. Of course he said “it was ok” and I insisted if it wasn’t, he should just say so and Celeste can take me home or I will walk home.
So, pawned off to a complete stranger, Nathan took me home. I texted Celeste saying if I die, I am haunting her for the rest of her natural life. We started chatting. Apparently I couldn’t shut up in the car and talked about everything and anything that came to my mind. I’m pretty sure Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama and South Park was mentioned a fair bit and in the mix of the conversation, I asked how old he was. He told me he was 29 and I started laughing and said that he is lying. He started laughing and said “how old do you think I am” and I said, “not that much older than me, maybe 25/26”. After telling him my age (23 about to turn 24), I found out he was 6 years older than me, we turned our attention to music.
Before I knew it, we were pulling up into my driveway. I mentioned that I was driving a 1200 Datsun and he said “maybe you can take me for a drive someday”. I replied “someday” and before he knew it, I said thank you for the lift and I was out of the car walking to the front door.
A few days later, I got a text from Celeste asking if it was OK for Nathan to have my number, and 5 years later, here we are……
…… getting engaged on our 5 year anniversary.
Getting down on one knee, my best friend asked me to marry him. Relaxing in a little stream, deep within the Border Ranges, he asked me if I wanted to and after a few “what the fucks” I said hell yeah.
5 years together, it was a perfect token to our Christmas day anniversary.
We’ve had a big 2017 already. I graduated from Uni, Nathan getting a promotion, buying and building our first home, starting my Masters, moving into our beautiful home and adding on to our family, this proposal was just the cherry on our amazing 2017 cake.
I hope you all enjoy our little story and most of all our blog.
